Especially the Reverse Buyer Seller Meet (RBSM), in association with the EEPC India opens new avenues for doing global business while exhibiting at a domestic exhibition, says Rattan Singhania, who has taken over as the new President of Indian Pharma Machinery

Manufacturers Association (IPMMA) while giving an overview of the PHARMA Pro & Pack expo in an interview with Shardul Nautiyal.

What are the latest advancements in the pharmaceutical machinery and packaging industry in India?
The key strengths and core aspects of the Indian pharma machinery include; robust machine designs incorporating latest engineering technology with highly competitive cost. At the same time, the demand of high quality and advance features from the end-users of pharma manufacturing facilities from India and internationally as well, where Indian pharma machineries are being exported, is the major force for Indian pharma machinery industry to have constant new development in the existing products. Resulting the best outcome by fulfilling these demands offers high performance, minimum product change over time, plug & play options, tool-less change overs, less power consumption, no fine setting required, no skilled manpower required, are more automated and aesthetic and finally are compliant to C-GMP.

How does Indian pharma machinery and packaging manufacturers compare with their global counterparts?
Nowadays, Indian pharma packaging machine manufacturers are producing good quality machines. However, they need to work on finishing of machines, bring in consistency in machine performance and machines should be manufactured as per customer’s requirements. There should be minimum change of parts & changeover time. They should also provide flexibility for sticker & paper labels and finally should be versatile and flexible with both, glass & pet bottles.

How will PHARMA Pro&Pack Expo 2015 boost the pharma industry in India?
The PHARMA Pro&Pack Expo 2015, PharmaLAB Expo 2015 & iPHEX Exhibitions 2015 put together are expected to attract over 20,000 visitors, which also includes 750 overseas buyers from 130 countries across the globe. Between PHARMA Pro&Pack Expo 2015 and iPHEX 2015, there are 523 exhibiting companies from 18 countries who will showcase their latest products and services. All put together, this will create numerous business opportunities for Indian pharma machinery manufacturers.

What are the novel features of PHARMA Pro&Pack Expo 2015?
The PHARMA Pro&Pack Expo 2015 will also have a buyer-seller meet (BSM) which will see participation from over 750 international buyers and will help the Indian manufacturers have a one-to-one interaction with these foreign buyers. The fundamental reason behind hosting the BSM is to promote ‘Made-in-India’ pharma machinery & engineering to the worldwide pharma markets and the BSM strives to directly support and encourage the Indian pharma machinery export trade, especially those from the SME sector. The buyers will be represented by countries from around the world which already have a developed pharma manufacturing base.

As the new President of IPMMA ,what are your plans to promote the pharmaceutical machinery sector in India?
The Indian pharma machinery industry is well established within Indian pharmaceutical industry, and performing a very crucial role as the backbone of the Indian pharmaceutical manufacturing industry providing robust machines with world-class technology, and quick service after sales as being the domestic market.

However, the Indian Pharma Machinery Manufacturers Association (IPMMA) is also in continuous efforts to strengthening the client-server relationships through various promotional activities. These include; PHARMA Pro&Pack Expo, an annually organized international exhibition on TOTAL pharma manufacturing technologies, and concurrent exhibition - PharmaLAB Expo featuring analytical lab instruments and supplies. PHARMA Pro&Pack Expo exhibition offers an unparalleled business networking opportunities to a smallest entrepreneur to showcase their technology skills to domestic and international buyers. PHARMA Pro&Pack Expo and PharmaLAB Expo are being organized by IPMMA and GPE EXPO PVT. LTD. The co-located exhibition, iPHEX 2015 (organized by PHARMEXCIL) showcase the complete spectrum of pharma chemical – API, bulk drugs, excipients, formulations, contract manufacturing etc.

PHARMA Pro&Pack Expo 2015 scheduled from May 13 to 15, 2015 at Mumbai Exhibition Centre in Mumbai is the 3rd edition. PharmaLAB Expo 2015 – a pavilion featuring analytical lab equipment is concurrent with PHARMA Pro&Pack Expo 2015 & iPHEX 2015 (organized by Pharmexcil) will be making the visit of every single attendee more meaningful and informative. These shows together will help boost prospects of companies mainly in the SME segment.

For the first time in the Indian pharma machinery segment, a Reverse Buyer Seller Meet (RBSM), in association with the EEPC India opens new avenues for doing global business while exhibiting at a domestic exhibition. More than 80 international buyers are being hosted by the Govt. of India to explore and select the best suitable Brand INDIA pharma engineering products / services. At the same time, Pharmexcil is hosting more than 700 international buyers from 130 nations across the world. These RBSMs would be the largest most buyer seller meet in the Indian pharmaceutical industry.

The official print media of IPMMA – PHARMA Pro&Pack is a quarterly published magazine featuring technologies & trade. PHARMA Pro&Pack magazine offers an extended reach to its advertisers straight on the desk of the buyer with highly resourceful contents every issue.

Technology seminars and road shows (gathering of the pharma professionals engaged at plant facilities) among the different pharma clusters across India connect clients not only once a year during the exhibition, but at pre-scheduled program round the year.

IPMMA Association activities are being promoted during pharma specific national and international exhibitions to disseminate the facts and awareness among the pharma industry.

What are your views on the future prospects of the industry?
The future of the Indian pharma machinery industry is very bright. The Indian pharmaceutical industry posted double digit growth rates in 2014-15. As in the previous fiscal year, in 2015-16 too, the sector is expected to post the same or higher growth rates despite a few headwinds.

The Indian Brand Equity Foundation (IBEF) has forecast that the Indian pharmaceuticals market is expected to expand at a CAGR of 23.9 per cent to reach US$ 55 billion by 2020 from just $6 billion in 2005 and $12 billion in 2013. Of the overall market, generic drugs account for 72 per cent of revenue share, OTC drugs 19 per cent and patented drugs nine per cent.

All these developments will no doubt also boost the prospects of the Indian pharma machinery industry as pharma companies keeping pace with growth will either modernise their existing technologies or invest in new machineries.

It is a known fact that till a few decades back, the Indian pharmaceutical manufacturing sector was heavily dependent on imports to meet its needs of machinery and equipment. However, in recent years, the tables have turned to such an extent that India now exports pharma machinery to around 92 countries across the world.

Pharmaceutical machineries made in India are installed and under operations at FDA-approved manufacturing facilities in the US, Australia, Africa etc. meeting international standards and parameters. As these countries mandate proper validation of the products, the importance of machinery that incorporate advanced technologies are also increasing.

Kindly give us the overview of the IPMMA activities in India?
IPMMA also represents the Indian pharma machinery sector in Govt. of India though EEPC India (a set up by Ministry of Industry & Commerce, Govt. of India). Also, IPMMA represents Brand INDIA machinery and pharma engineering to more than 92 countries where the member companies of IPMMA currently export their pharma machineries & services.

IPMMA works for the benefit of all manufacturers of pharma machinery. It especially gives encouragement and recognition to small scale machinery manufacturers. And to do so, organises trade shows like the PHARMA Pro&Pack Expo, which can boost mainly companies in the small scale sector.

Kindly offer us the overview of last year's event?
The Pharma Pro&Pack Expo held in 2014 was the second edition of the trade show and saw participation from over 480 exhibitors from 18 countries. The footfall of the pharma trade attendees was more than 19,200 during the three-day event, including 1,400 international visitors from 138 countries. The 2014 edition also saw the launch of a special pavilion especially for the Indian analytical instruments manufacturers.
